Internship Students: Breaking Into Your Field
So you’ve taken a handful of classes in the field you plan to pursue. You think you’re ready to apply your knowledge in the field, but you’ve never had an internship before. All the experience you’ve achieved has been in a classroom. This isn’t a bad thing, although it can be difficult to find an internship you enjoy doing with this lack of experience. It’s hard to blame companies for not wanting to take a risk on someone who’s never done real work in the field before, but it is still very unfortunate for every competent student in the world who is eager to get out of the classroom to learn things firsthand. It’s not easy, but there are many ways you can land that first internship without any of the experience they are looking for.
If you’ve taken classes at a college level, it is more than likely that you’ve done some impressive work at home for the curriculum. Obviously you feel foolish putting this particular work on your resume, but that doesn’t mean the person interviewing can’t find out about them. If you’ve put together a powerpoint presentation that you’re particularly proud of, print out some slides onto a page and show what you’re capable of at an appropriate part of the interview. If you think you really impressed a professor you’ve had, ask him or her whether it would be doable to get a recommendation letter on your behalf. If they see how dedicated and determined you are to get this first internship, in addition to samples of the in-class work you’ve done, it might not be so impossible after all.
